Thinking Inside the Box: Sweet Potato Flapjack Tuesday

Today is Pancake Tuesday (a.k.a. Fat Tuesday/Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras). I’m not exactly a religious person and I certainly don’t give up anything for Lent. I do, however, adore an excuse to eat pancakes.

Blueberry Pancake Oatmeal for the Morning After

On Tuesday night the tornado sirens went off. They made my toddler (J) cry. I bundled him up along with my laptop and cell phone and we hid in the closet.

My husband (G) was on his way home. I hoped his car was nowhere near the storm’s path. I was scared. I’m just not used to the crazy weather here in Florida. (Don’t even mention the H-word).

J and I huddled in the closet and watched monster truck videos on Youtube (his fave is Grave Digger) in between FB checks to see if my nearby friends had news (I trust them more than the weather stations!). Read the rest of this entry »

When Does Food Taste THE BEST? Part 5: When Someone Else Does the Cooking

My mom says that food tastes better when somebody else makes it. She loves cooking but she also loves eating. Getting to eat someone else’s creation is a treat.

Last weekend I pondered this as I bit into a breakfast egg wrap at my parents’ holiday kitchen. I make egg wraps all the time and never marvel at their brilliance.

I had watched my mom make the wraps. Here’s my theory: They tasted better because everything was done slightly differently than how I do it.
